See that big, sidewalk-looking thing right there next to the road? That is a designated f*cking bike path.

And walkers also.

I’m a cyclist, do you hate me?
*runs
This pisses me off too, as does double-file riding in bike lanes. I like to say that there is a difference between cyclists and people on bicycles, this being a person on a bicycle.

And bicycles have a legal right to the road as much as cars do so fuck you too. :)
http://bicycledriving.org/public-awarene… read this a bit before lighting up the hate.
you see it’s a legal designated bike path but usually those also become legal designated walking/jogging, dog walking, old people holding hands strolling on the wrong side, families three-wide biking slowly paths that for anyone on a good clip, it becomes a horrible experience. When I’m on it, I’m anywhere from 15-25mph cruise and that runs over anyone on that path.

You know what’s worse? Someone who either moves at a snail’s pace in a bike lane, and those who go the wrong way.

Bikes go on roads.

I can agree with that.

Yes. The special bike roads that are made specifically for bikes and have signs posted every half mile declaring that they are for bikes.

The path is not in any commercial or residential zones, it runs alongside a main road between towns. There are ZERO pedestrians.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 21:22 |

Yeah, but I’d rather share the road with a car than a jogger.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 21:23 |

I find it’s the opposite. The hardcore cyclists are the ones who are likely to be of the mentality that it’s safe to be mixing with 50mph traffic (it’s not ), while the casual bikers are scared of traffic (which they should be) and will stick to the paths where it is safer.

-As a cyclist, this person doesn’t know what they are doing. I don’t even rank her as a fred, but below a fred. This kind of cyclist doesn’t know much about it, but just goes on the very edge because they think it’s their legal duty to do so. I hate these. And double filing is fine, but everyone has to be experienced enough to stay close enough.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 21:29 |

This is 50mph traffic she is mixing with while there is a perfectly empty and safe bike path right next to her.

Colliding with a jogger will result in skinned knees and palms. Colliding with a car moving at 50mph will result in a whole lot more. I think I’d choose the jogger any day.

As others have said, this is a woman on a bike, NOT a cyclist.
Personally as an regular cyclist, I would either be on the path or avoid that route all together.

Matters not. Bicycles have equal rights to the road as much as cars do. Click on the link. It’s not a tree-huging green cycling site, it shows the laws and who has what to complain about.

I don’t really care about legality. I know cyclists have every right to use the road. This is an issue of common sense and safety. There is no reason why she should not have been using the safe, empty bike path. Instead she chose to mix it with cars moving at 50mph. She may have had the right to use the road, but she did not have reason to.

cyclist [ noun]: 1. a person who rides a bicycle.
This woman was indeed a cyclist.

She has reason to. She chose to. Just like people carry guns cause it’s their second amendment and they choose to exercise their legal ability to do that. Having reason to is not the metric that others get to judge what people get to legally do .

I can legally burn my house down, but I’m sure as hell not going to do it because it’s a bad idea.
Likewise, riding in traffic may be allowed but it’s just idiotic when there is a safer, easily accessible alternative.
Just gotta get a bonfire permit from the FD and as long as I don’t endanger someone else’s property or attempt to make an insurance claim I should be fine.

She should be ticketed

Remember that sentiment when you’re sideswiped. It’s easier to compete with a car than pass a jogger on the left.

And my 85 year old mother drives a car just like me. But I would no more equate my driving skills and sense with my mothers than you should this woman and a person who logs more hours on a bike than the average person does driving a car over the course of a year.

Nowhere did I say I was speaking about people who take cycling seriously. In this instance, “cyclist” was used as a catch-all term for “someone on a bicycle”, which happens to be the actual definition of the word.
![]() 05/22/2015 at 22:45 |

Somebody tried to unknot this argument by giving the cyclist (whatever experience level they may be) their very own road. That being said, this person is arrogant enough to what she’s doing or hasn’t got the good sense to get out of the path of a two ton bullet going 50 mph or better.
![]() 05/23/2015 at 02:04 |

That’s stupid. I’ve biked (with a group of people in a wide shoulder) on the side of a highway before with 50-60 mph traffic. It’s immensely scary and going downhill is one thing, but going back up is frightening.
![]() 05/23/2015 at 03:09 |

What’s the big deal? Move 2 feet over and pass safely. The US has some weird laws for biking because everyone has cars, here in Europe you are required to move over a meter or so, and pass safely, nobody cares. Are you really so pissed off at a bicycle that you come here and rant for them riding in the shoulder?

So from your picture, she appears to be an idiot. There are a bunch of good reasons not to use a bike lane though:
It’s actually a sidewalk. Riding on sidewalks is illegal in many places, and is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians
There is excessive debris in the bike lane. Frequent wide tired cars will clear this from the road (often into the bike lane), but it can easily collect in bike lanes. Not a huge problem for mountain bikes, but a patch of gravel or sand can easily make for a bad day for a road bike, to say nothing of broken glass and such.
The bike lane pavement is excessively cracked. Shoulders break down before the crown of the road, causing potentially unsafe riding conditions.
Upcoming left turns.

Here, I can help you. You should stop your car, throw the Big Gulp in the trash and get yourself a bicycle. Now you can pass her on the bike path and make your comment to her directly.
![]() 05/23/2015 at 13:57 |

Or I could throw the big gulp out the window and bean her in the head as I drive by.

You’ll be fine. Just hope that they don’t swerve in front of you all of a sudden.
I know what you mean though, that’s the same as pedestrians walking on the road as opposed to a perfectly clear sidewalk.
![]() 05/27/2015 at 20:06 |

That’s the problem. She may be steady, and you might have plenty of room to pass, but what if, what if , something happens? What if at that moment she hits an obstacle and falls into the path of the car? It’s nerve wracking to pass cyclists that are riding on the road because no amount of good driving on your part can mitigate outside influences like that.

No disagreement there. That’s the thing in life, you just don’t know and it sucks to have to give thought and care for others even when they don’t much care for their own safety.
I think the main takeaway here is to realize you’re in a close-to-2-tonnes fast moving hunk of metal, and anyone else who are not in a similar equipment as yours will always lose out in the event of a crash or accident. It might be a hassle but you’re better off just driving like 2 to 3 feet away from the cyclists no matter what. I tend to give them as much room as possible especially when there are no vehicles coming from the opposite direction, otherwise I try to hug the centerline and still give them plenty of room.
